"On the Front Lines of Behavioral Health and Justice Services"
Wednesday November 20, 2024 1:30pm - 2:30pm EST
The relationship between sexual offending and mental illness is a complicated one. Often people assume that mental illness must have a connection to or be the cause of sexual offending. In reality, there is not simply one factor that causes a person to commit a sexual offense. This course will explore the relationship between mental illness and sexual offending. Specifically, the relationship between different types of mental disorders including psychotic disorders, personality disorders, paraphilias and substance use disorders and how they factor into sexual offending behaviors. This course will dispel myths about sexual offending motivations and causes so that professionals will have a better understanding of why a person commits a sexual offense and how it relates to mental health concerns.
