Cannabis and Young Adult and Adolescent Development

Session Description: This module introduces practitioners to the importance of understanding adolescent development in the context of continued, long-term cannabis use. In addition to the obvious physical changes, there are significant cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral developments that occur in adolescence. Through research, it has been determined that cannabis continues to be the drug of choice for most teens. Juvenile Treatment Court teams should consider the research and recommended practices associated with reductions in cannabis use. This module also focuses on ways to build a more responsive Juvenile Treatment Court by unpacking and understanding the research. At the conclusion of this session, Juvenile Treatment Court Teams will be able to identify the effective ways to change behaviors.
Learner Objectives: After this session, participants will be able to:
      • Describe research and recommended practice related to adolescent cannabis use and its effect on the brain.
      • Illustrate practical approaches to translating relevant research into practice. Focusing on how Juvenile Treatment Courts can modify approaches used to decrease cannabis use.
      • Identify key resources that Juvenile Treatment Court teams can use to further train on adolescent development and cannabis use.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE

During facilitated discussions, Court Officials will explore the essential techniques for basic drug identification. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of the most common ways drugs are sold. The instructor will employ PowerPoint presentations and props to illustrate different types of narcotics, providing court officials with valuable insights that they will apply in their Court official roles.

ANTICIPATORY SET: This class is designed to educate court officials about the fundamentals of drug identification and provide insights on the most common ways drugs are sold. This class will help identify possession V Possession with the intent to sell CDS.  By the end of the presentation, court officials should have a solid grasp of the various narcotics they may encounter while working as court official.  As a bonus, Court Officials will learn how to field test drugs.
 
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 
Court Officials will gain an understanding of the definition of controlled substances schedules, different ways drugs are sold illegally, identification of possession V PWID, the difference between opiates and opioid drugs and what is prescription fraud.

Emerging Mental Health Trends and Responses for Youth

Session Description: This session includes two interrelated segments – 1) Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), which monitors six categories of health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including – behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol and other drug use, and tobacco use (among others); 2) Discussion how Juvenile Treatment Court teams can use the data highlighted to consider gaps in services and take steps to fill those gaps.

      • Review what existing data collection activities tell us about the behaviors of youth and how these data can inform JDTC practice.
      • Identify emerging mental health trends that may impact services in your community.
      • Recognize practical responses to meet the needs of youth in your community.
