"The Definition of Insanity"
Wednesday November 20, 2024 5:00pm - 6:30pm EST
An exploration of the Miami-Dade Criminal Mental Health Project (CMHP) — a novel approach to solving the mental health crisis that could be a model for America. Shocked by how people with mental illness were treated in Miami-Dade’s jails, Judge Steve Leifman works with a team of dedicated public servants, as well as former adversaries in the criminal justice system, to help people with mental illness navigate from lives of tragedy to possibility. The documentary follows a diverse group of people committed to the common goal of helping people with mental illness who enter through the courthouse doors. The film reveals a humane criminal justice approach to mental illness that is orchestrated from the court outwards into the community. From court dates to group therapy, the film follows Miami’s community-based experiment to solving the mental health crisis, where incarceration becomes the last resort and everyone from the police to prosecutors works together to support the notion that “recovery is possible.”

Rethinking Phases
Thursday November 21, 2024 12:45pm - 2:00pm EST
The presenter will provide an overview of why treatment courts should have a clear phase structure that addresses participant needs in a manageable and effective sequence. The overview will highlight the participants progress to the next phase when they have achieved specific, attainable goals necessary for them to accomplish more challenging long-term goals. This progression is separate from the participants' treatment plans and is not based on the level, dosage, or type of treatment they are receiving.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn the importance of using risk, need, and responsivity in developing phases.
  • Learn the necessity of program phases that are consistent with treatment requirements and goals
  • Design written materials that adequately communicate what is expected of participants during each phase of the adult treatment court program

Overcoming Childhood Trauma, Neglect & Abuse and Breaking Generational Trauma
Thursday November 21, 2024 2:30pm - 4:00pm EST
Overcoming childhood trauma, neglect, and abuse involves recognizing the impact of these experiences and actively working to heal. This process often includes seeking therapy, building supportive relationships, and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Breaking generational trauma requires awareness of patterns passed down through families, along with a commitment to change these dynamics. By fostering resilience and promoting open communication, individuals can create a healthier environment for themselves and future generations.
